After
getting my MS in rehabilitation science and technology
from the University of Pittsburgh's School of Health and Rehabilitation
Science, having spent two years at the Human Engineering Research
Laboratories (Pittsburgh VA Hospital) studying service and hearing dogs
as assistive technology and writing my thesis: The Quality of Life of
Service Dog Partners, I took the summer off to relax and unwind by
taking my dogs to nearby Frick Park as often as possible to
train and play with them and socialize with other dog owners. Before
the summer was through, I was inspired by my dogs and the research I
had done on them with several ideas for new types of dog toys, training
tools, and in particular a better dog bowl (patent pending). Having an undergraduate degree in business, I started writing a business plan and a provisional application for patent which gives me one year to promote my idea and get a non-provisional patent application submitted by a qualified patent attorney. In order to strengthen and validate the business plan, I need testimonials from dog owners and pet care professionals who have used a prototype based on my new idea. If you have a dog or cat or other pet and would like to try an innovative more interactive way of feeding them, please read on and contact me about becoming a proof of concept/market tester. Also, if you know a pet care professional and through your introduction they test a prototype, I will give you 5 $10 shares of stock that could be worth $500-$15,000 in 3 to 5 years. An excerpt from the business plan: "The product that will launch this company is a spherical round, ball shaped food container designed to hold dry dog/catpet food (kibble) and dispense it as the pet rolls it or plays with it. I found when my dogs are fed using a prototype, they eat slower, chew more of the food, get playful exercise, use their noses to find/ the food (like they did for centuries in the wild), and have a more interactive, entertaining eating experience. My overweight labrador stopped overeating and from getting more exercise, became more youthful and playful, and my over-active Australian Shepherd/Catahoula mix found it extremely entertaining and not only burned off much of her excess energy but an hour or more was added to her daily play/training time. This is quite an innovation when you consider that for years most dogs have been eating their food out of bowls, and it's been my experience that they usually gobble it up or, pardon the pun, woof it down :-) Given the benefits provided by this innovative way of feeding pets, it could revolutionize the pet feeding industry. This product will possibly be manufactured by a factory in nearby Cleveland that manufacturers dog toys out of a similar Kong-like material I plan to use." I plan to raise $22,000 through selling shares of stock at $10 a share, writing a PASS, that will allow me to invest several hundred dollars a month of my Social Security disability income into the business, and a matching grant $11,000 from the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. Two to three thousand will go for prototyping a working model through a manufacturer. Most of the rest will be used to manufacturing a few days thousandth each of two or three different sizes to be sold on QVC or the Home Shopping Channel. I expect them to sell out rather quickly and profit enough to get the un-provisional patent, make quite a few thousand more, and fund a trip to the largest pet Expo next year in San Diego where I can introduce it to Wal-Mart, Pet Smart, and PetCo. |
